Quitting smoking for the family, too

By COLLEEN DANE

Life coach Jill Binder is challenging all smokers out there to quit for a day, and help someone else while they're at it. Binder, through her online and phone based smoking cessation program, wants people to not only quit for a day with her help, but to donate the $8 they would normally spend on cigarettes to a charity of their choice.

"I wanted to show people not only that they can quit smoking but how powerful they can be as well," says Binder, who is encouraging the funds to go to the Red Cross for tsunami relief. Binder, who is based in Toronto, is hoping 100,000 people sign up - a number that doesn't even represent 10 per cent of the smokers in Ontario alone.
In exchange, Binder will provide her coaching services free - an hourly conference call will be provided, and e-mails throughout the day. It's her contribution, she says, to national non-smoking week.

While a day may not seem like much for many people, Binder says it's all she needs to redirect the potential quitter's focus.

The first few days are critical, but once the nicotine has been cleared from the patient's system, the addiction becomes the habit, she says."Most people only focus on the physical and they forget the other two," says Binder, explaining habit and stress-related causes.

Quitting, she adds, isn't just for the smoker, but for the family.
