Win a prize, do some good

By LAURIE MUSTARD

Mon, January 17, 2005

Wanna win a great prize? Of course you do, and to learn how to make that happen, pay very close attention to why Mayor Sam Katz is posing at the bottom of the page with a cardboard cutout named George. That Sam is such a good sport.

Our good mayor is actually helping the Heart and Stroke Foundation recruit volunteers for next month's door-to-door campaign, by introducing their man George, who will be instrumental in helping a few very lucky volunteers win some phenomenal prizes, just for donating a little time to Heart and Stroke.

Along with possibly winning a fab prize for your efforts, the funds volunteer canvassers and generous donors in Winnipeg and Brandon generate, will help save lives.

Gotta admit, I was truly surprised to hear more than 10 Manitobans die each day from cardiovascular disease. Mind boggling. Please help bring that number down by giving a little of your time next month.

Further info on volunteering, and GREAT PRIZES, is available by calling Heart and Stroke now at 949-2000. (The exercise alone, makes it worth doing ...) Enjoy!

WEEDLESS WEDNESDAY WINDFALL

Now here's a win-win for all concerned.

To help those who resolved to butt out on Jan. 1 but failed, "Canada's Stop Smoking Coach" Jill Binder has launched a national campaign to coach at least 100,000 Canadians to quit smoking on Weedless Wednesday, Jan. 19, and raise $1 million for tsunami relief.

"If you register for this Wednesday's challenge on my website -- www.quitforaday.com, pledge to quit for just one day, and donate the cost of that pack of cigarettes you would have been smoking to the Red Cross in support of tsunami victims (www.redcross.ca), or the cause of your choice, I will send you a Stop Smoking Starter Pack by e-mail, give you phone coaching, give you e-mail coaching, and you will have participated in something that you will feel amazing about.

"Not only that, but you pledge to quit for one day, and I will start you down the path to a smoke-free life!" Binder says. GREAT idea, with official permission from the Red Cross. Hop on board, folks. Besides a bad habit, what've you got to lose? Good luck.

THE LAST LAUGH

Another classic from Carolyn Rickey:

The Smiths were proud of their family tradition. Their ancestors had come to America on the Mayflower, and the family included senators and Wall Street wizards. The family decided to compile a family history, so they hired a fine author to combine all their research notes. However, one problem arose.

How to handle great Uncle George, who was executed in the electric chair. The author said not to worry, and when the book appeared it tactfully said:

"Great Uncle George occupied a chair of applied electronics at an important government institution. He was attached to his position by the strongest of ties, and his death came as a great shock."

Mission accomplished.
